What does Apple's supplier clean energy requirement mean for an Indian component supplier?

It means Apple expects the electricity used to make its parts to be renewable, and you will be asked to measure that electricity and show how it is covered. Apple's Supplier Code of Conduct asks direct manufacturing suppliers to reach 100 percent renewable electricity for Apple production before 2030. Check the edition you signed.

What Apple has said publicly

Apple has run a Supplier Clean Energy Program since 2015 and has a goal of carbon neutrality across its value chain by 2030. In October 2022 it called on its manufacturing suppliers to decarbonise Apple-related operations by 2030, including running that production on renewable electricity, and its Supplier Code of Conduct now asks direct manufacturing suppliers to reach 100 percent renewable electricity for Apple production before 2030. The annual Environmental Progress Report reports progress. Terms change, so read the edition Apple's team sends you rather than a summary.

First, measure the Apple share of your electricity

Most Indian suppliers serve more than one customer. Split the plant's kWh to Apple lines by sub-meter where you have one, or by machine hours or units produced. Write down the method and keep it the same each year. Use kWh from the bill; on kVAh bills convert with the printed power factor. This figure, times 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, is the location-based Scope 2 for Apple production.

Renewable options open to an Indian plant

What makes the claim hold up

Under the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance, a market-based claim needs an instrument that carries the renewable attributes, is retired or cancelled for you, comes from the same market, and matches the reporting period. Keep the contract, the monthly energy account or adjusted units, and any certificates for each year. Report location-based and market-based figures side by side so the buyer can see both.

Worked example: covering the Apple share

Allocation and volumes are illustrative. The location-based figure stays at 170.4 t whatever you buy.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your electricity bills and reports location-based Scope 2 at the CEA factor and market-based Scope 2 where you add instrument data, showing the renewable share. You can copy those figures into the buyer's supplier portal with the bills behind them.
