Do the Ministry of Power star-label carbon dioxide (CO2) projections use the 0.675 kilograms per kilowatt hour (kWh) grid factor?
Dividing the projected savings in the Ministry of Power releases gives 0.80 to 0.86 kilograms of CO2 per kWh for most label launches and 0.72 for visi coolers, against 0.675 for the financial year (FY) 2025-26 grid. The releases do not say which factor they used, so keep national projections out of your own report.
The ratios, from the releases' own figures (units of electricity taken as kWh)
- Deep freezers: 6.2 billion units saved by FY 2030 and 5.3 million tonnes of CO2. 5.3 / 6.2 = 0.855 kg per kWh, taking a unit as a kWh.
- Light commercial air conditioners: 2.8 billion units and 2.4 million tonnes. 2.4 / 2.8 = 0.857.
- Four appliances launched 1 March 2023: about 11.2 billion units by 2030 and close to 9 million tonnes. 9 / 11.2 = 0.80, approximately because the release says close to.
- Commercial beverage coolers: 11.67 billion kWh and 8.35 million tons over 2024 to 2034. 8.35 / 11.67 = 0.716.
Why they differ from 0.675
The releases do not state the emission factor, the years it covers or whether it is a grid average, so I cannot say why the figures differ. A projection over a decade can use a different factor from the one for a single reporting year. These ratios are my division, not figures in the releases.
For your own report use the factor for your reporting year (0.675 kg CO2 per kWh for FY 2025-26, 0.710 for FY 2024-25) on your own metered kWh. A national projection is a policy estimate for a whole market, not a saving on your meter.
What to do instead
Measure the kWh before and after, multiply by the factor for that year, and see the linked page on project reports for the same check on cluster projects.
A freezer saving 110 kWh a year (example)
- At 0.675 kg CO2 per kWh: 110 x 0.675 = 74 kilograms of carbon dioxide a year
- At the 0.855 implied by the deep freezer projection: 110 x 0.855 = 94 kilograms, which is 20 kilograms more
- The 20 kilograms is only a difference in factor, not extra savings
The 110 kWh is an example.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills into monthly records, so the kilowatt hours on your bills before and after a change sit in one place.
- Grid electricity emission factor
- Project reports: CO2 against the grid factor
- BEE star labels and your emissions
- Deep freezer star label
- Visi cooler star label

Last reviewed 2026-11-05. Projected savings are from the Press Information Bureau releases of 2 March 2020, 1 March 2023 and 1 March 2024. The kg per kWh ratios are my own division and are labelled as such. The releases do not state the factor behind them. The same check on cluster project reports is on the linked live page, and this page covers only the Ministry of Power star-label projections.
