What is the carbon footprint of a blister strip, and how do I calculate it per pack?

There is no standard figure; it depends on the film, foil and mass in each strip. Calculate it as grams of PVC, PVDC coating and aluminium foil per strip, each times its material factor, plus a share of forming and sealing power, then multiply by strips per pack.

Getting the mass per strip

Take masses from the bill of materials, or from area x thickness x density. Rigid PVC film of 250 microns at about 1.39 g per cm3 weighs about 348 g per square metre.

Better still, divide film and foil bought in a month by strips released. That includes the skeleton left after punching and the start-up losses that net masses miss.

Choosing material factors

Forming and sealing energy

Divide the blister line's kWh for a period by strips packed and multiply by 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh. If the line has no sub-meter, use motor and heater ratings x running hours and label it an estimate.

Per pack, and what to state

Per pack = per strip x strips per pack, plus carton, leaflet and shipper if the buyer asks for secondary packaging. State the boundary (cradle to gate of the packaging), each factor with its source, and the GWP set where factors include gases other than CO2.

Illustrative example: one 10 tablet PVC/PVDC strip

All masses and factors are illustrative inputs, not published values. At these numbers the foil is about half the total, which is why its source matters.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads PVC film, foil and other packaging purchase invoices by quantity into the supplier evidence trail, and the plant's electricity bills into Scope 2. Material factors come from your suppliers or cited eco-profiles.
