How is employee turnover rate worked out for the BRSR?
Guidance from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) sets turnover rate as persons who left in the financial year x 100, divided by the average number employed in that category. The average is the headcount at the start plus the headcount at the end, divided by 2.
The formula in the guidance note
SEBI's guidance says the entity shall calculate the turnover rate for a financial year (FY), for a particular category, as (No. of persons who have left the employment of the entity in the FY x 100) / Average no. of persons employed in the category. The average is (persons employed in the category at the beginning of FY + persons employed in the category at the end of FY) / 2.
Who counts as having left
Persons leaving include those who leave voluntarily or due to dismissal, termination, retirement or death in service.
What the table asks for
- Permanent employees and permanent workers only.
- Male, female and total for each.
- Three years side by side: the current financial year, the previous one, and the year before that.
A point to settle before you fill it
Each cell has its own average, so the male rate and the female rate will not average out to the total rate. Someone who joined and left inside the same year is in the leavers count but in neither headcount. That second point is our reading of the formula; the guidance does not mention it, so note how you handled it.
Example: permanent workers at one plant
- Start of year: 80 (70 men, 10 women). End of year: 100 (86 men, 14 women). Left during the year: 27 (24 men, 3 women)
- Average headcount: (80 + 100) / 2 = 90
- Total: 27 x 100 / 90 = 30.0%
- Men: average (70 + 86) / 2 = 78, so 24 x 100 / 78 = 30.8%
- Women: average (10 + 14) / 2 = 12, so 3 x 100 / 12 = 25.0%
The headcounts are an example.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills into monthly records. It does not hold headcount or exit records, so this table stays with your payroll and HR files.
