How can a small company buy carbon removal credits?
Buy a small volume of issued credits from a project or reseller and have them retired in your company's name, or open your own registry account and retire them yourself. On Verra anyone can open an account without a purchase agreement. Check the methodology, vintage and retirement record before you pay.
Two ways to hold and retire
- Your own Verra account: open it any time, receive the credits, retire them yourself and pay the retirement fee.
- Through the seller: the seller retires the credits on your behalf. Ask for the registry's retirement record naming your company as the beneficiary.
What to check before paying
- Project ID, and that the credits are active.
- Methodology and version. The ICVCM has approved Verra VM0044 v1.2 for biochar under its Core Carbon Principles.
- Vintage: Verra shows each calendar year separately.
- Issued volume. The registry shows the verified volume and how much has been issued from it.
Removal or reduction
Verra states each methodology's outcome: VM0044 v1.2 is eligible for the removals label, while VM0051 v1.1 rice methane credits are reductions. Make your public claim match the credit you retired.
Buying before issuance
Paying now for tonnes a project will deliver later is a forward contract, not a credit purchase. Read the delivery and shortfall terms first.
What Senseible does here
Senseible's buyer view traces a carbon removal tonne to its field, kiln and lab test, shows permanence and who signs off, so a small buyer can see the record behind a credit before paying.
