Should we link staff incentives to a carbon target?
Only once the figure is reliable. Reward what a team controls, such as diesel per tonne or kWh per piece, measured from bills and meters. Avoid rewarding a total that can fall because output fell, and check the data before paying out.
Good incentive measures
- Energy or fuel per unit of output.
- Compressed air leaks fixed per month.
- Share of bills recorded on time.
Risks
- Totals that drop when production drops.
- Estimates replaced by guesses to hit a number.
- Paying before a second person checks the data.
