The Chandigarh engineering profile of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) prints 20,417 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) for 6.84 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG): what is the right figure?

About 20.4 tonnes. The printed 20,417 equals 6,840 kg of LPG times about 2.985 kg of CO2 per kg, so it is in kilograms, not tonnes. The table's total of 159,932 tonnes includes it, and without the slip the rows add to about 139,535.

What the energy table prints

Why 20,417 is a unit slip

The monthly table puts railway component units on 570 kg of LPG a month. 570 x 12 = 6,840 kg, which is the 6.84 tonnes in the energy table. The 2006 defaults from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for LPG are 47.3 gigajoules a tonne and 63.1 kg of CO2 a gigajoule, which give 2.985 kg of CO2 per kg. 6,840 x 2.985 = 20,417 kg, exactly the printed figure. So the line is in kilograms and sits in a tonnes column. The right figure is about 20.4 tonnes, and the LPG is under 0.02% of the cluster's CO2.

The total with the slip taken out

The rows add: 134,093 + 66 + 5,356 + 20,417 = 159,932, so the printed total carries the slip. With 20.4 for LPG the rows add to 134,093 + 66 + 5,356 + 20 = 139,535 tonnes. Other lines tie: electricity 4.70 + 1.16 + 2.18 + 3.35 = 11.39 million kWh a month, x 12 = 136.7 million, against 136.8 printed; diesel 67.2 + 16.6 + 31.2 + 47.9 = 162.9 kL a month, x 12 = 1,955 kL, as printed.

One more line that does not tie

The monthly table gives fasteners 19.00 kL of furnace oil a month, which is 228 kL a year, but the energy table prints 22.8 kL, one tenth. The 22.8 appears to be what its 22 toe and 66 tonnes of CO2 are worked from. The profile does not say which is right. Furnace oil is 0.2% of the cluster's energy on the printed row, so it barely moves the total either way; check your own invoices.

The LPG line, step by step

Figures from the TERI profile (2016); the factor is from the 2006 IPCC defaults, which TERI does not state for this line. Power in the cluster at today's grid factor: 136.8 million x 0.675 = about 92,340 tonnes, from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) value for financial year 2025-26.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills into monthly records, so a year of power, diesel and LPG bills gives you your own totals to set beside these. It does not measure boilers or read a profile report, and it is not a third-party verifier.
