How does a Chhattisgarh silico-manganese plant work out carbon per tonne?
Add the CO2 from reductants by carbon mass balance to the CO2 from the electricity your furnaces use, then divide by tonnes of alloy. Silico-manganese is excluded from CBAM, so this is a footprint for buyers and lenders, not a CBAM figure.
Direct CO2 by mass balance
Carbon in coke, coal and electrode paste, minus carbon leaving in the alloy, slag and dust, times 44/12. Tonnes of each reductant come from purchase and stock records, carbon content from the supplier analysis.
Electricity
Furnace kWh from the meter times the grid factor, 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh from the CEA database, or your captive plant's own factor if you generate.
Why it matters even without CBAM
Steelmakers abroad count your alloy in their own figures and ask for it. A clear per tonne number with its workings is easier to defend than a range from a trade body.
Illustrative footprint for one tonne of silico-manganese
- Coke: 420 kg x 85% carbon = 357 kg C; carbon in alloy 1.5% = 15 kg C
- Direct CO2: (357 minus 15) x 44/12 = 1,254 kg
- Electricity: 4,000 kWh x 0.710 = 2,840 kg CO2
- Total: about 4.1 t CO2 per tonne of alloy
Inputs are illustrative. Use your own furnace data, slag carbon and electricity meter readings.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
