How does a corrugated box plant count the fuel for its corrugator steam?
Fuel burnt in the boiler that feeds the corrugator is Scope 1: tonnes of coal, briquettes or litres of oil times their emission factor. Divide by tonnes of board made to get a per tonne figure. CO2 from biomass briquettes is biogenic and reported separately.
What to record
- Fuel purchases and stock change for the boiler.
- Calorific value and carbon content from the supplier or lab where available.
- Board produced in tonnes or square metres, matching the unit your buyers use.
Biomass briquettes
CO2 from burning biomass is biogenic, outside the scopes; methane and nitrous oxide from the fire stay in Scope 1. Keep proof the briquettes are biomass only.
A quick check
Compare steam fuel per tonne month to month. A rise often means condensate not returning or steam traps failing.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
