How does a Firozabad glass unit count CO2 from soda ash and limestone in the batch?
Carbonates in the batch release CO2 when they melt: about 0.415 t per tonne of soda ash, 0.440 t per tonne of limestone and 0.477 t per tonne of dolomite, by IPCC 2006. This process CO2 is Scope 1, added to the furnace gas.
Steps
Tonnes of each carbonate from purchase or stock records.
Multiply by its IPCC factor.
Add to Scope 1 alongside gas burned in the furnace.
Cullet
Recycled glass (cullet) has no carbonates left to release, so more cullet means less process CO2 per tonne melted.
Worked example: one month (illustrative quantities)
- Soda ash: 1,000 kg x 0.415 = 415 kg CO2
- Limestone: 300 kg x 0.440 = 132 kg CO2
- Process CO2: 547 kg (Scope 1)
Quantities are illustrative; factors are IPCC 2006 stoichiometric values for full calcination.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
