How much gas does the Firozabad glass cluster burn, and what does that mean for pot, tank and muffle furnace units?

A Firozabad tank furnace burns about 52,000 scm of gas a day, roughly 107 t CO2. A pot furnace, open or closed, burns 3,500 scm, about 7 t. Across the cluster TERI counted about 879,000 scm a day, roughly 658,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. Most muffles still burn coal.

The furnaces behind the number

Cluster energy and CO2

Total energy was about 310,000 tonnes of oil equivalent a year, of which gas was 264,663. The rest was coal, pet coke, LPG, kerosene and diesel. Gas alone, at 879,280 scm a day, is about 321 million scm a year, or about 658,000 tonnes of CO2 at 2.05 kg per scm. Melting takes 0.20 to 0.35 scm per kg of glass melt, depending on the furnace. That is 0.41 to 0.72 kg CO2 per kg from fuel, before CO2 from soda ash and limestone in the batch.

What it means for each kind of unit

What buyers and lenders want from a glass unit

Glass is not a CBAM product, so EU buyers ask for a footprint per kg or per piece rather than a declaration. Lenders for furnace rebuilds want gas per tonne before and after. Keep monthly gas bills with quota and above-quota quantities, tonnes of good glass drawn, batch recipes, and for muffles, coal and firewood purchases.

Worked example: one day of gas, by furnace type

Gas per day is from TERI's cluster profile. CO2 uses 2.05 kg per scm and excludes batch carbonate CO2. Use your own gas bills.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads gas and electricity bills into a monthly record for each furnace site, so a tank or pot unit can show gas per tonne from its own bills.
