How much CO2 does a float glass furnace emit per tonne of glass?
Work it out from your own records: fuel burnt in the furnace times its emission factor, plus process CO2 from soda ash, limestone and dolomite in the batch, divided by tonnes of glass pulled. Cullet lowers both parts. Add electricity separately for Scope 2.
The calculation
- Furnace fuel: gas or oil quantity times its emission factor.
- Process CO2: tonnes of each carbonate times its stoichiometric factor (soda ash about 0.415 t CO2 per tonne, limestone 0.440, dolomite 0.477).
- Divide the sum by tonnes of glass pulled, not tonnes sold.
Things that move the number
- Cullet share, both internal and bought in.
- Furnace age and regenerator condition.
- Oxygen firing, which changes fuel use but adds electricity for oxygen.
For automotive buyers
Car makers ask per square metre of a given thickness. Convert with the glass density and state the thickness used.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads gas, fuel and electricity invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site and keeps lab reports and production logs beside them, so each figure can be traced to its documents.
