Does a Lumezzane valve maker owe CBAM on imported steel bars?
Yes, if it imports more than 50 tonnes of covered steel a year, such as bars under CN 7214 or 7228. The finished valves are usually outside CBAM today, but the bars bought from India, Turkey or elsewhere are not. Brass bars are not covered.
What to do
- Check the CN codes of bars and forgings bought from outside the EU.
- Apply to be an authorised declarant if over 50 tonnes a year.
- Ask bar suppliers for actual embedded emissions.
What could change
The Commission proposed extending CBAM to many steel intensive downstream products from 2028. Check whether valve and fitting codes appear in the text finally adopted.
What Senseible does here
Senseible keeps supplier invoices and the emissions data that comes with them in one dated, fingerprinted record per shipment, and its CBAM cost calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034. Senseible does not verify emissions, register declarants or file CBAM declarations.
