What goes into the CBAM figure for steel from a gas-based DRI plant in Misrata?
Natural gas used to reduce iron ore in the DRI plant, carried into the steel as a precursor, plus electrode and charge carbon and gas at the melt shop and rolling mill. Electricity is not counted. Gas-based DRI usually gives a lower figure than a blast furnace.
The DRI part
Reforming natural gas and reducing the ore releases CO2. Those emissions, per tonne of DRI, become precursor emissions in the steel made from it.
The melt shop and rolling mill
- Electrode and injected carbon in the electric furnace.
- Natural gas for reheating billets.
- Any scrap added counts as zero.
Records to keep
- Gas meter readings for the DRI plant and the rolling mill.
- DRI output and its carbon content.
- Charge mix per heat: DRI, scrap and any pig iron.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, electricity and production documents into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions an EU importer asks for.
