What CBAM figure should a buyer use for steel from a gas based DRI plant in Sohar?
Ask the plant for actual embedded emissions per tonne of the product you buy, covering the gas burned in the direct reduction shaft, the electric arc furnace, lime and alloys. A gas DRI route usually lands well below a blast furnace route, but only the plant data for your product and period counts.
What the figure covers
- Natural gas used as reductant and fuel in the DRI shaft.
- Electrode and charge carbon in the arc furnace.
- Purchased precursors such as pellets, DRI or HBI bought in.
Electricity
The arc furnace draws heavily on power. For steel the definitive period charges direct emissions, but electricity is still reported, so keep the meter data.
If data is missing
Default values apply, and they are set high on purpose, so real data usually costs less.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, electricity and material invoices into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual figures an EU importer asks for. Senseible does not verify emissions or file CBAM declarations.
