Do regenerative burners cut furnace fuel and emissions?
Yes, often substantially. Regenerative burners work in pairs: one fires while the other stores heat from the exhaust in a ceramic bed, then they swap, so combustion air arrives very hot. Less fuel heats the same steel. Prove the saving with fuel per tonne before and after.
How it differs from a recuperator
- A recuperator passes exhaust heat through a metal heat exchanger, limited by the metal temperature.
- A regenerative pair stores heat in ceramic media, so the air can be preheated much hotter.
What to check before buying
- Higher flame temperatures can raise NOx; ask about low-NOx designs.
- Dusty or corrosive exhaust can foul the ceramic bed.
- Controls must handle the switching cycle.
Proving the saving
Compare fuel per tonne heated over a few months before and after, at similar throughput. Multiply the fuel saved by its factor, for example 2.05 kg CO2 per scm of natural gas.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills and applies IPCC 2006 factors and the CEA grid factor (0.710 kg CO2 per kWh), so you can compare Scope 1 and 2 before and after a change from the documents themselves.
