What are the steps to register a biochar project on Puro.earth?
Apply through the Certify Credits form for an initial qualification, sign the Platform Agreement and pass KYC, register the facility in the Puro Registry, prepare an audit document package, pass a VVB facility audit and then an output audit. CORCs are issued in the Puro Registry for each verified tonne.
The steps in order
- Initial qualification: Puro.earth checks readiness and eligibility from the Certify Credits form, against the Puro Standard biochar methodology.
- Platform Agreement: sign it, complete KYC on your organisation and become a Puro Registry account holder.
- Facility registration: register the production facility and the removal activity in the Puro Registry.
- Preliminary assessment (optional): an expert review that finds gaps early.
- Audit preparation: submit the audit document package. Puro.earth reviews it for gaps before a VVB is engaged.
- VVB facility audit: an independent auditor checks the facility, technology and processes. Approval holds for up to five years.
- VVB output audit: the auditor checks the CO2 removed and stored in each reporting period.
- CORC issuance in the Puro Registry.
Documents to have ready
- Life cycle assessment showing the facility removes more CO2 than it emits.
- Biomass sourcing evidence against Puro's Biomass Sourcing Criteria v1.3.
- Additionality assessment under the Additionality Assessment Requirements v2.1.
- Project description and stakeholder engagement report on Puro's templates.
Who pays the auditor
Puro.earth manages and pays the VVB for both audits, so the supplier does not hire its own auditor. The supplier keeps ownership of its CORCs and its buyer relationships.
Before you start
Check the current biochar methodology in Puro's Document Library: Edition 2025, version 2. Puro.earth ended the transition period for facility audits against the 2022 edition in December 2025.
What Senseible does here
Senseible prepares the batch evidence that goes into the audit document package: kiln sensor temperature logs, chain of custody, geotagged photos and lab results, flagged where a rule is missed, as one verifier evidence pack. The VVB audits it; Puro.earth issues the CORCs.
