How does a Sivakasi printing press work out carbon per tonne printed?

Add press and finishing electricity at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh and generator diesel at 2.68 kg per litre, then divide by tonnes of printed product dispatched. Paper and board usually carry far more carbon than printing, so add them as purchased goods from supplier figures.

Main loads

Tonnes dispatched

Use tonnes of finished product dispatched, so wastage and makeready sheets carry their energy into good output.

Paper and board

Paper is Scope 3 purchased goods. Use mill figures where offered; otherwise use a named database factor and say which.

Worked example: one month (illustrative inputs)

Quantities are illustrative; paper and ink are extra, from supplier data.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
