What does a supplier report to Walmart under Project Gigaton?

You report goals and results for actions that cut or avoid emissions, grouped under areas such as energy, packaging, waste and transportation, through Walmart's Sustainability Hub. Walmart's calculators turn your activity data, such as kWh saved or solar kWh generated, into avoided emissions. It is a reduction report, not a full inventory.

How Project Gigaton works

Walmart launched Project Gigaton in 2017 to cut or avoid one billion tonnes of emissions in its product supply chains by 2030. In February 2024 it said suppliers had reported reaching that figure, six years early, and the programme has kept collecting supplier reports since. Action areas have included energy, nature, waste, packaging, transportation, and product use and design. Suppliers sign up, set goals in one or more areas, and report progress each year in a reporting window on the Sustainability Hub. Walmart's reporting guidance for the year sets the areas, questions and deadlines, so download the current version before you start.

The data behind an energy entry

Reductions are not the same as your footprint

Gigaton counts the change an action caused against a baseline, so a supplier whose total emissions rose because it grew can still report real avoided emissions from a solar plant or a boiler upgrade. Keep the inventory and the reduction claim separate. Do not count the same project in two areas, and do not claim a reduction you have not measured; an estimate should say it is one.

Keeping the entry defensible

Walmart may apply its own factors when its tools convert your inputs, so enter activity data where the form asks for it, and keep your own calculation alongside with the factor and source you used, such as 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh from the CEA database for Indian grid power. Keep the bills and meter readings for each figure in case the buyer or an auditor asks.

Worked example: two energy actions at a garment unit

Walmart's calculators may give a different figure if they use another grid factor; report the kWh, and keep this calculation as your own record.

What Senseible does here

Senseible supplies the energy and emissions figures behind a Gigaton entry: monthly kWh and fuel from your bills and invoices, year on year, each line tied to its source document. You enter those figures in Walmart's Sustainability Hub yourself.
