Senseible

Our Chinese aluminium supplier says its Yunnan smelter runs on hydro power. How do we check the claim?

Ask for the smelter's electricity source by month, not a general statement. Yunnan relies heavily on hydro but has cut smelter power in dry seasons. Hydro lowers your Scope 3 figure; it does not change the CBAM figure, which counts anode and PFC emissions only.

What to ask for

Why dry seasons matter

When hydro output falls, smelters in the province have been asked to cut load, and the remaining power can come from a mix that includes coal. A yearly claim can hide that, so monthly data is a better check.

CBAM and footprint are different

For aluminium goods only direct emissions are charged under CBAM, so the power source does not move that figure. Your cradle to gate footprint does include electricity, and that is where hydro makes the difference.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads supplier invoices into dated, fingerprinted records, so each purchased material in a Scope 3 figure traces back to its document.
