Best biochar carbon credit platforms for 2027
A biochar tonne becomes a credit only after a standard accepts the method, a verifier checks the kiln and lab evidence, and a registry issues it. These platforms split that work differently, and charge for it differently.
Senseible makes one of the tools on this list.
The list
1. Isometric
- Who it is for: Biochar and other removal suppliers that want fast certification, and buyers who want the evidence behind each certificate.
- Best for: Biochar projects, industrial or distributed, that want CCP-approved credits with every data point public.
- Pricing: Published on Isometric’s pricing page.
- Strengths: Biochar Production and Storage v1.0 is CCP-approved; Isometric says it issued the first CCP-labelled biochar credits. A module for distributed and small-scale kilns that records time and temperature for every batch.
- Limits: A certifier and registry: buyers still find supply through projects or brokers. Fees for smaller volumes are on request.
2. Verra VM0044 v1.2
- Who it is for: Biochar project developers issuing Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) in the Verra Registry.
- Best for: Biochar projects that want the most widely held credit type, with a CCP-approved method.
- Pricing: Published on Verra’s fee page.
- Strengths: VM0044 v1.2 is CCP-approved and has been active since 27 June 2025. Covers soil uses and newer uses such as biochar in concrete and building materials.
- Limits: v1.2 added an investment analysis to prove additionality. A major revision, draft v2.0, was published in July 2026, so rules may change.
3. Puro.earth
- Who it is for: Biochar and other engineered removal suppliers, and the buyers who retire their CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs).
- Best for: Biochar producers selling CORCs to removal buyers, with fees published before they sign.
- Pricing: Published on Puro.earth’s fee page.
- Strengths: Biochar methodology and registry under one roof; over 1.5 million CORCs issued across methods, by its own count. Fee table and fee calculator published on its site.
- Limits: Its biochar methodology is still under ICVCM assessment, so CORCs carry no CCP label yet.
4. Rainbow
- Who it is for: Developers of engineered removal and industrial projects, including industrial and distributed biochar.
- Best for: Distributed biochar projects that want a credit that reflects how their kilns run.
- Pricing: On request.
- Strengths: Separate methodologies for open-kiln and closed-kiln distributed biochar. Certification in under three months, by its own account, through Rainbow Arc.
- Limits: Its biochar methodologies are still under ICVCM assessment. Fees are not published.
5. Carbonfuture
- Who it is for: Durable removal suppliers, biochar first, that want help getting certified and sold; buyers of removal portfolios.
- Best for: Biochar producers that want MRV software and buyers in one place.
- Pricing: On request. Its API is free to use.
- Strengths: Carbonfuture MRV+ tracks each delivery from production to storage. Structures data for CSI, Isometric and Puro.earth certification.
- Limits: Does not issue credits; a standard and its registry do. Prices not published.
6. Senseible
- Who it is for: Biochar project developers and FPOs keeping one record for farmers, plots, kilns and lab tests.
- Best for: Farm and village kiln projects that need the batch record a verifier checks.
- Pricing: On request.
- Strengths: Kiln sensor temperature logs, lab results and geotagged photos join one chain of custody per batch. Automatic flags with kiln at least 450 C, H:Corg at most 0.7, spreading inside the plot and transport distance.
- Limits: Does not issue credits: an accredited verifier checks and the registry issues. Prices on request.
Before you pick a registry
- Verra VM0044 v1.2 has been active since 27 June 2025 and is CCP-approved. A draft v2.0 was published on 15 July 2026.
- A CCP label needs both an approved methodology and a CCP-Eligible programme. Puro.earth, Isometric, Rainbow and Verra are all CCP-Eligible programmes.
- An accredited verifier checks the evidence and the registry issues the credit. MRV software prepares the record before that.

Quick answers
Which biochar carbon credit platform takes farm or village kilns in 2027?
On this guide’s checks, the best fit is Isometric, then Rainbow and Verra VM0044 v1.2. Why Isometric: a Distributed and Small Scale Projects module (v1.1), with facility grouping for large projects.
Which biochar standards can issue CCP-labelled credits in 2027?
On this guide’s checks, the best fit is Isometric, then Verra VM0044 v1.2 and Puro.earth. Why Isometric: its Biochar Production and Storage protocol v1.0 is CCP-approved.
Which biochar carbon credit platform suits an industrial pyrolysis plant in 2027?
On this guide’s checks, the best fit is Isometric, then Verra VM0044 v1.2 and Puro.earth. Why Isometric: certificates issued on the public Isometric Registry.
Which biochar carbon credit registries publish their fees in 2027?
On this guide’s checks, the best fit is Isometric, then Verra VM0044 v1.2 and Puro.earth. Why Isometric: published on Isometric’s pricing page.
Which tool keeps the biochar kiln, lab and field record a verifier asks for?
On this guide’s checks, the best fit is Senseible, then Carbonfuture and Isometric. Why Senseible: keeps the batch record a verifier checks.
How to choose
- Issues serial-numbered biochar credits in its own registry. Ask: "Which registry holds the serial number, and who can see it retired?"
- Biochar methodology approved under the ICVCM Core Carbon Principles. Ask: "Is this exact methodology version CCP-approved, or only the programme?"
- Takes small, low-tech or farm kilns, not only industrial plants. Ask: "Can a group of farm kilns register as one project?"
- Asks for the production temperature of each batch. Ask: "What temperature record do you need for each batch?"
- Lab test of the biochar and a check on how long its carbon stays stored. Ask: "Which lab tests, how often, and what H:Corg limit applies?"
- Takes data from digital MRV tools, or runs its own. Ask: "Can our MRV software send data to you directly?"
- Public record of issuance and retirement. Ask: "Can a buyer see this batch’s issuance and retirement without asking us?"
- Fees published. Ask: "What do we pay to register, issue and retire?"
