Best carbon removal marketplaces and buyers for 2027
Removal tonnes rarely sell like offsets off a shelf. Much of the volume moves through forward contracts signed before delivery, and every buyer vets projects its own way. These are the buyers and marketplaces, and what each one checks.
Senseible makes one of the tools on this list. It does not broker or sell removal credits.
The list
1. Supercritical
- Who it is for: Companies buying durable carbon removal; biochar projects looking for committed buyers.
- Best for: Companies that want a durable removal portfolio with delivery protection.
- Price or fees: Published on Supercritical’s site, per removal method.
- Strengths: Buffer pool and pre-vetted replacements when a project under-delivers. Facilitated a 1M tonne biochar offtake with Microsoft for a pre-operational project.
- Limits: Durable removals only. A marketplace, not a registry: credits are issued by the standards it buys from.
2. Puro.earth
- Who it is for: Buyers retiring CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs), and the suppliers selling them.
- Best for: Buyers who want engineered removals on a registry with spot and offtake routes.
- Price or fees: Published on Puro.earth’s fee page.
- Strengths: Spot inventory from certified suppliers, or offtakes for future supply. Retirement fee waived on sales reported as multi-year offtakes.
- Limits: Engineered removals only. Suppliers keep their own buyer relationships, so the buyer still negotiates the deal.
3. Frontier
- Who it is for: Durable removal suppliers, from pilots to scale.
- Best for: Durable removal suppliers that can show strong MRV and want a large, credible first buyer.
- Price or fees: Typical deal sizes published on Frontier’s apply page.
- Strengths: Applications open on a rolling basis for both prepurchases and offtakes. Publishes its evaluation criteria and its full portfolio with contracted and delivered tonnes.
- Limits: Permanent removals only. Offtakes expect 10,000 tonnes or more within five years.
4. Carbonfuture
- Who it is for: Companies buying durable removal portfolios; removal suppliers that want certification support and buyers.
- Best for: Buyers who want removal portfolios with delivery data behind each tonne.
- Price or fees: On request. Its API is free to use.
- Strengths: Indian biochar suppliers in its network, including Varaha, Carboneers in Odisha and Mash Makes in Karnataka. Publishes its due diligence framework: over 100 data points and 30 proof points per project.
- Limits: Durable removals only. Prices not published.
5. Isometric Registry
- Who it is for: Buyers holding and retiring Isometric certificates, and the suppliers Isometric certifies.
- Best for: Buyers who want to open the evidence behind every tonne before they pay.
- Price or fees: Published on Isometric’s pricing page.
- Strengths: Every certificate’s data and calculations are public. Covers removals such as biochar and rock weathering, and nature-based protocols such as reforestation and mangroves.
- Limits: A registry and certifier: buyers still source supply from the projects. Fees for smaller volumes are on request.
6. Rainbow
- Who it is for: Buyers of engineered removal and avoidance credits, and developers seeking certification.
- Best for: Buyers who want biochar and other engineered removals with co-benefits tracked in the registry.
- Price or fees: On request.
- Strengths: Shows buyers its upcoming project pipeline by geography and value chain. Approved as a credit issuer by Frontier, by its own announcement.
- Limits: Sales go through resellers and partners. Prices not published.
7. Microsoft carbon removal program
- Who it is for: Nature-based and engineered removal suppliers applying to Microsoft’s procurement cycle.
- Best for: Larger removal projects, nature-based or engineered, that can meet a demanding buyer’s criteria.
- Price or fees: Buys tonnes; terms on request.
- Strengths: Publishes its quality criteria, guidance, FAQ and buyers’ guides. Takes both nature-based and engineered removals.
- Limits: One buyer with its own criteria and cycle. Contract terms are not published.
8. Watershed Marketplace
- Who it is for: Companies buying carbon removal, clean power and sustainable aviation fuel certificates.
- Best for: Companies already measuring with Watershed that want vetted removals in the same place.
- Price or fees: On request.
- Strengths: Over 30 nature-based and permanent removal projects, by its count. Publishes the six considerations it vets projects against.
- Limits: No Indian supply named on its site. Prices not published.
9. Abatable
- Who it is for: Corporate buyers running carbon credit procurement; project developers looking for buyers with mandates.
- Best for: Developers who want to answer buyer RFPs without paying to take part.
- Price or fees: Free for developers to join. Buyer pricing on request.
- Strengths: Signs buyer mandates before supply is sourced, so RFPs have committed demand. Runs the RFPs for the Symbiosis Coalition’s nature-based removal purchases.
- Limits: Covers all credit types, not removals only. Buyer fees not published.
10. Senseible (for buyers)
- Who it is for: Buyers who want to trace a removal tonne to its field, kiln and lab test; projects that keep their record on Senseible.
- Best for: Buyers checking the evidence behind a biochar tonne before they sign.
- Price or fees: On request.
- Strengths: Each tonne traces to its plot, kiln sensor temperature log and lab test. Forward contract and milestone tracking shows delivery against the schedule.
- Limits: Does not sell or broker removal credits. Covers only projects that keep their record on Senseible.
