How do I check water stress at a supplier's location in India?

Look up the supplier's exact location in WRI Aqueduct for baseline water stress, then check the Central Ground Water Board's groundwater category for its block. Combine both with the supplier's own water source: a groundwater-dependent unit in a high stress basin and an over-exploited block is your highest risk.

Step 1: baseline water stress from WRI Aqueduct

Aqueduct 4.0 defines baseline water stress as total water withdrawals divided by available renewable surface and groundwater supply in the sub-basin. It groups results as low (below 10%), low to medium (10 to 20%), medium to high (20 to 40%), high (40 to 80%) and extremely high (above 80%), plus arid and low water use. Enter the supplier's coordinates, not just the city, because adjacent basins can differ. CDP's water security questions use the same idea of water-stressed areas.

Step 2: groundwater category from CGWB

The Central Ground Water Board's Dynamic Ground Water Resources assessment rates each block, mandal or taluka by stage of extraction: annual groundwater extraction divided by annual extractable resource. Up to 70% is safe, 70 to 90% semi-critical, 90 to 100% critical and above 100% over-exploited. Use the latest edition, since categories shift between assessments.

This matters more than Aqueduct for most Indian MSMEs, because they draw from borewells rather than rivers.

Step 3: ask the supplier four questions

  1. What are your water sources and annual volumes: borewell, municipal, tanker, surface?
  2. Do you hold a groundwater abstraction NOC, and what volume does it allow?
  3. Did you buy tanker water last summer, and for how many weeks?
  4. Do you treat and reuse effluent, or run zero liquid discharge?

A simple rating rule

What Senseible does here

Senseible's climate risk service covers physical risks, including water stress at your own sites; for supplier locations, agree the scope with the Senseible team. Its supplier evidence trail lists who you buy from, which gives you the list of locations to screen.
