Why do fastener makers count steel lost as scrap in CBAM?

Because the embedded emissions of every tonne of wire rod you use go into the fasteners, even the part cut away. The Commission's steel guidance gives the example: if 20% is cut away as scrap, 100 tonnes of rod carry their emissions into 80 tonnes of screws and nuts.

What goes into a fastener figure

Why the mass matters

Rod and fasteners sit in the same CBAM category, iron or steel products, but their masses differ. Divide the rod's total emissions by the tonnes of fasteners produced, not the tonnes of rod bought.

What to ask your rod supplier

A verified figure per tonne for the year of production, with the installation named. Without it, you or your buyer fall back on default values.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads an exporter's fuel and electricity invoices into dated, fingerprinted records that a monitoring plan and a verifier can trace back to source. Senseible does not verify emissions, register operators in the CBAM Registry or file CBAM declarations.
