Is replacing an IE2 motor with an IE3 or IE4 motor worth it, and how much CO2 does it save?

It pays when the motor runs long hours near full load. Work out input power at your load with each efficiency (output divided by efficiency); the difference times running hours is kWh saved. Price it at your tariff and multiply by 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh. Lightly used motors are better replaced at failure.

The formula

  1. Shaft output in kW = rated kW x load factor.
  2. Input with old motor = output / old efficiency; input with new motor = output / new efficiency.
  3. kW saved x running hours a year = kWh saved.
  4. kWh saved x tariff = rupees saved; kWh saved x 0.710 = kg CO2 saved.
  5. Payback in years = extra cost / rupees saved a year.

Where the efficiency figures come from

IE classes are set in IEC 60034-30-1 and in India in IS 12615. Efficiency depends on rating and number of poles, so read both values from the nameplates or the standard's table for the same kW and poles. Use efficiency at your actual load if the maker publishes part-load values, because many motors run at 50 to 75 percent of rating.

A decision rule

Proving the saving afterwards

Log kWh on a sub-meter for a few weeks before and after, at similar production. A whole-factory bill rarely shows a single motor's saving clearly, so keep the sub-meter readings with the purchase invoice and the two nameplates.

Worked example: 15 kW motor at 75% load, 6,000 hours a year

Prices, tariff and efficiencies are assumptions for the arithmetic.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the units on your electricity bills and applies the CEA factor of 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, so before and after periods can be compared from documents. The motor saving estimate and any claim based on it stay your own.
