How should an engineering unit near Rourkela count the steel it buys from the plant or its stockyards?
Steel bought is Scope 3, Category 1, purchased goods: tonnes from your invoices multiplied by a per tonne figure for that product. Ask the stockyard or the plant for the plant's product figure; if you only have a route average for blast furnace steel, use it, name the source and mark it as an estimate.
Steps
- Total tonnes by product from purchase invoices.
- Get a plant figure per tonne, or a stated average.
- Multiply and keep the source next to the number.
Why it matters
For a fabricator, bought steel is usually far bigger than its own electricity and fuel. A buyer asking for your footprint will look here first.
If you export to the EU
Fabricated structures under CN 7308 are CBAM goods. Your own figure then carries the steel as a precursor, and default values apply if you cannot get the mill figure.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads coal, coke, gas, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so each figure in a CBAM or buyer response can be traced back to the documents behind it.
