Which grid emission factor sits behind the carbon dioxide (CO2) lines in the 2017-18 cluster tables of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)?

Three TERI profiles with 2017-18 data, Agra foundries, Rajkot auto components and Coimbatore compressors, all divide out to 0.82 kg of CO2 per kilowatt hour (kWh). TERI states no factor. 0.82 equals the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) conventional-stations average for 2017-18, and is 9% above its all-sources 0.754.

Three profiles, one ratio

What CEA gives for the same year

CEA's version 22.0 results sheet gives a weighted average emission rate for conventional stations, without renewables, of 0.822 for 2017-18 excluding imports and 0.818 including them. That matches the 0.82 in all three tables. TERI does not say it used it. Our page on why some sources quote 0.82 for India's grid explains this measure. Against CEA's weighted average that includes renewables, 0.754 for 2017-18 (0.675 for financial year (FY) 2025-26), the three tables run about 9% above: 0.82 / 0.754 = 1.087. So the 9% gap is against the all-sources average only.

The same kWh at two other factors

What to do with a cluster line

Take the kWh, litres and kilograms from a profile table, leave its CO2 column, and apply the CEA factor for the year of your own data. The steps are the same as on our page on four profile CO2 lines.

Rajkot auto components cluster, three readings

Electricity rows from TERI's 2017-18 profiles; 0.754 is CEA's all-sources weighted average for 2017-18 and 0.675 its FY 2025-26 value. 0.82 matches CEA's conventional-stations figure for 2017-18. The LPG and diesel factors are Senseible's 2.98 and 2.645 kg per unit; 0.675 belongs to bills for FY 2025-26, not to 2017-18 data.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills into monthly records, so a year of power and fuel bills gives you your own totals to set beside these. It does not measure boilers or read a profile report, and it is not a third-party verifier.
